The restless Cuban musical life, and its international projection constitute the spark which led to the formation of Havana Casino band, led by an excellent trumpeters, Angel Toranzo. Havana Casino inherits its name from Don Aspiazu s band, which in the 1930 s led the greatest boom Cuban music has ever had in the whole world. But this contemporary version does not simply go back to those ways of making music, but it coexists with a much closer trend, as it adds a piano, conga drums and one more trumpet to turn into an orchestra. Although its repertoire does not limits itself to a particular period, as is the case of Me Tenian Amarrao con P (I was tied up with P), which Nico Saquito made so popular in the late 40 s, Hay Fuego en el 23 (There s Fire in 23), by Arsenio Rodriguez s band in the 50 s, and Sera que Se Acabó (Maybe it s Over), by the Van Van in the 80 s.-- What they try is to bring back the Golden Decade which began with Arsenio Rodriguez and the creation of his Band in 1938, which was consolidated with the work by Conjunto Casino, Sonora Matancera, and Conjunto de Roberto Faz, among many others... Rescuing that way of making music does not presuppose you will find pronounced musical references, since in Havana Casino s work there is an effort to reach synthesis, not forgetting that it s important to come to terms with today s music.
